Praias Fluviais: the other beaches of Portugal Posted by João on 5:40 pm

Portugal's know for it's beaches. No surprise there. Up and down the coast, or across in the case of the Algarve, or around in the case of Madeira and the Azores, many kilometres of sandy beaches, possessing all kinds of characteristics, can be founds. We also know that the majority of the Portuguese population live along the coastal regions so beach access is by no means difficult to come by for many. Now for those who live in inland communities, where ocean beach access is not so easy to come by, the alternatives are either water parks, river beaches or dammed-up swimming holes. In all cases, in Portugal these bathing locations are better known as praias fluviais.

Now in the Portuguese interior, the water park phenomenon has particularly taken off in the last few years, many of them extravegant in nature, going as far as to imitate tropical island settings as is the case with Praia Fluvial das Rocas in Castanheira da Pera:

And yet others go as far as shipping in sand in order to provide that ocean beach feel, as is the case with the recently inaugurated Live Beach Praia Fluvial in Mangualde:

Many of these beach complexes, in fact, are created to become much more then just a place where you can go for a soak, often becoming mini-entertainment complexes. The two projects shown below - Mangualde's Live Beach (on the left) and Praia Fluvial de Valhelhas (on the right) - show exactly this. Mangualde's Live Beach comes with a stage and holds concerts by big name Portuguese acts through out the Summer. Equally Valhelhas host a rock festival towards the end of August.









So although these somewhat 'mega-projects' have been carried out to bring the coastal beach-like atmosphere into the interior, let it be said that the traditional praia fluvial of the Portuguese interior are actually historic in nature, or should I say as historic as the villages or aldeias many can be found in or close to. A simple visit to the site http://www.praiasfluviais.com/ will provide you with all sorts of information and here you will see exactly what I speak of. For a true bathing experience in history ... pick anyone of the 21 praias fluviais located in the shale villages (aldeias de xisto) of Central Portugal, for example. From the praias fluviais of Benfeita and Piodão in the Açor mountain range near Arganil, to Aldeia Ruiva, Mealhada and Fróia (pictured below) around Proença-a-Nova, all are beautiful man-made bathing locations in the midst of history and rural tranquility, worthy of being experienced.

As also mentioned, another praia fluvial option is that of beach areas created by river reservoirs. Although various can be found through out Portugal, again in Central Portugal the River Zêzere and the Castelo de Bode reservoir provides some of the best praias fluviais in Portugal. The aldeia of Dornes near Ferreira do Zêzere is one such example, providing the beauty of a small mountain village with two very relaxing beaches along the Zêzere (see below).

So if you're still thinking of putting in some beach time this Summer here in Portugal, your encouraged to consider the praias fluvias Portugal has to offer. It's most definitely a soak worth taking.

The Portuguese mercearias of yesterday and today; but tomorrow? Posted by João on 9:29 pm

In a country with more square metres (or should we say kilometres) dedicated to commercial shopping space then any other in Europe, which is that of Portugal today (with much of that space quickly becoming empty - crisis anyone!), if we were to go back to 1970's Portugal, surely the country would be at the bottom of such a ranking. Back in the day, grocery shopping didn't mean a trip to the Continent or the Pingo Doce or the Modelo or the Lidl or whatever you may have in the vacinity of your home. Grocery shopping, and basically any sort of shopping of household items, meant a stroll to the local mercearia (cornershop/cornerstore, you pick). Here's what they looked like (and some still do).

Now in a country that has been conquered by shopping malls, unsurprisingly the need for the local mercearia has dwindled. Dwindled yes ... but not yet outright disappeared. In the cities of Lisbon and Porto, a walkabout in many of the historic neighbourhoods will lead you to a number of historic mercearias, often still operated by the same individuals who were there before the coming of the boxstore and the shopping mall. For example:

The city of Porto has what are perhaps two of the most well know historic mercearias of Portugal: Casa Oriental and A Pérola do Bolhão (both below). Having opened its doors 101 years ago, Casa Oriental is particularly well known for its bacalhau (salted cod), also used to decorate the entire store front. Founded in 1917, A Pérola de Bolhão has become a symbol of the city due to its artistic, painted tile storefront.

In both cases, these mercearias have extended their history beyond their sales means - they are now historic symbols of the city. But what about those that don't earn that status? Are these bound to become a footnote in time? Most likely. Most recently, however, an attempt at a new generation of mercearia was started up in Lisbon. With the goal of bringing back the old neighbourhood mercearia feel, the Mercearia Creativa attempts to do just that, bringing with it certain touches of modernity as well (in this day-and-age of modern technology the internet helps http://www.merceariacreativa.com/).

Surely, the concept may be somewhat utopian trying to beat out the big boys behind the box stores and the supermarket chains. Still, to put it simply, it's worth a try. After all what you see below looks pretty impersonal doesn't it?

The Summertime BBQs of Canada Posted by João on 6:57 pm

Alright, continuing on with these themes of summer and food, as has been the focus of our last posts, today I want mesh the two together and talk about the old fashion summertime outdoor barbecues which are very much a part of the summertime fun and imagery of those long days of summer north of the 49th.

Ok, first, as many may already know, BBQing can basically be accomplished in two ways:

1.) via the old gas BBQ, more conviniente for those backyard or deck gathering with friends;

2.) via the fire pit, usually more common when camping out.

Now no matter what route you take, what is most important to remember is that a good ol' fashion BBQ not only brings together good food, that is often also accompanied with plenty of great drinks, it is also about camaraderie and being with good friends and family. Sticking to the food, however, I think we can all agree that pretty much everything tastes great over an open flame - meat, fish, vegetables and lets not forget these things below:

Yes, that's right yummy marchmallows roasting on an open fire, a culinary delight that is vertually unknown here in Portugal. In fact, if anyone knowns where good chunky marchmallows can be purchased here, leave a comment.

Now although BBQing may have certain ritualistic elements symbolic of the Canadian summer, in the same vain that Canada is a multicultural haven, so is BBQing synonymous with multiculturalism: Greek souvlaki, Chinese BBQ pork, Brazilian picanha or maminha, the abundancy of German sausages, and the list goes on. Of course we cannot forget the Portuguese in Canada and their passion for a BBQ - bifanas, chicken, sardines, and so on and so forth. Seldom is a gathering of Portuguese communities in Canada in the summer BBQ-less.

One of the most interesting features of these Portuguese community BBQs, however, are the BBQ instruments themselves - the often homemade oil barrel sawed in half BBQ that is then put on wheels and is ready to travel.

Well it's only natural that I should be hungry now and it's certainly not a soup or salad that I'm hankering down for. I'm off to eat and if you BBQ, BBQ safely and enjoy!

When most people think of Portuguese food, they associate it with the typical Mediterranean diet - lots of fish, olive oil, legumes, salads and plenty of wine.

They can usually identify one or two main dishes, typically codfish or sardines, and the emblematic “pastéis de nata”.

However, Portuguese cuisine is a veritable smorgasbord of flavours and dishes that gratify the taste buds and congest the arteries.

First off is the simple, unassuming “Bitoque”. This consists of either a beef or pork steak, fried in olive oil, lard or grilled and topped with a fried egg. It’s accompanied by white rice, some French fries, and a simple salad. This is the staple dish of taverns all over the country.  Almost healthy if it were not for the French fries and fat based sauce the steak is swimming in.

Next up is the “Francesinha”, a kind of heavy-duty sandwich, made the unhealthiest and yummiest way possible. Start with a slice of thick white bread, and then layer a fried pork steak on top, a slice or two of wet cured ham, linguiça, and then fresh sausage. This is topped off with another slice of thick bread, a fried egg, and a couple of slices of cheese. The “sandwich” is then put on a plate, surrounded by French fries, and covered in a spicy, thick, tomato and beer sauce, which causes the cheese to melt. Salad is never included, they don’t even attempt to trick you into thinking that this is remotely healthy. This is my personal favourite, and it’s unbeatable when paired with a hot summer evening, an ice-cold beer, a football match and good friends.

“Alheira de Mirandela” is a sausage made from a combination of tasty animals, namely duck, chicken, rabbit or veal, and bread. No pork though, as this was a scrumptious way for the Jews to deceive the Portuguese Inquisition (no one ever expects the Portuguese Inquisition…). This sausage comes from the Mirandela region, and is practically the only thing of note to come from that region (just kidding).The sausage is either deep fried in oil or grilled over hot coals. Tradition dictates that it is served with boiled greens and potatoes, but as that combination was far too healthy, it is frequently served with French fries, white rice and topped with a fried egg. Sometimes a small salad is included to trick the health conscience.

Lastly, you have “Leitão da Bairrada”, which is suckling pig roast over an open fire. It is seasoned using a garlic and pepper seed paste, giving it a distinctive flavour.  It is normally served with lettuce salad and orange slices, though many places also serve it with French fries. Surprisingly this is the only dish that does not managed to include a fried egg.

All of the above should be served with either an ice-cold national beer or a chilled white wine from the “vinho verde” region.

To top it off, some “ovos moles” from Aveiro, a caloric bomb whose explosive charge consists of egg yolk and sugar.  It's the quintessential Portuguese "dessert", because it contains the two most common ingredients in Portuguese sweets (egg yolk and sugar), but does away with all the unnecessary fluff, like looking tasty.

Now I’m hungry.

Well if you haven't noticed yet, Summer is here. More important, however, the month of August is just around the corner. We all know what happens in Portugal during the month of August: yes, that's right ... nothing. Since almost everyone in this country seems to go on holidays during this month, the country is left to run at half gas (insert your comment on who this country seems to runs at half gas all year around here). Lisbon in August, in fact, often looks a lot like this:

Now lets look at this from an anthropological point of view, and ask: what makes this country different during the month of August (beyond the aforementioned half gassing it)? And lets start with a typical image of what things often look like on August 1st:

That's right: the mad rush, but to where are all them folk going you ask? Well let us do it pictorially for you once again:

Looks familiar? That's right, it's the Algarve, the destination of many during the 'dear month of August'. It's the time of the year when the suburban middle-classes sticks the kids and the dog into their roomy Opel Corsas and off they go to Quarteira, to Armação de Pêra, to Monte Gordo or any other place that looks like their suburban neighbourhood back in the big city but instead by the sea.

Meanwhile, in the other empty depths of Portugal (at least during the other 11 months of the year), as in the interior regions where the majority of the people have had to emigrate, during the month of August, those who departed for other countries return home, turning the small villages of Trás-os-Montes, Minho, Beira Baixa, etc. into lively locations full of joy and fun and exotic languages. Typical of August in the província are the festas dedicates to the home-returning emigrants. Not only do the emigrants count down the days until August rolls around, those who await them do as well, because August means one thing and one thing only: festa na aldeia (partying it up in the villages).

So be it in the city, in the beach destinations of the Algarve, or throughout the aldeias of the country, August is meant to be different and no other month seems to substitute it. So this August, like any other August, Portugal will once again be posting up one of these:

I have to admit; I have been living in Portugal for a few years now and have yet to been victim of a crime. Not much of a compliment though, as I had lived 22 years in Canada and was never the victim of a crime there either.

Not your everyday crime, though in his defense, the donkey was a looker.

That is not to say that crime doesn’t exist here in Portugal. As you might have noticed, summers have been marked by a gang crime wave, which involves large groups of youths, wreaking havoc on commuter train lines. Robbing gasoline stations and jewelry stores, attacks on nightclubs, and a rise of violent crime related with local and international organized crime has been on the rise as well. Linked with the economic development of the country is an increase in white-collar crimes, as seen in recent cases such as Face Oculta, Apito Dourado, and Freeport. These are also the far more difficult cases to try to conclusion, due to the political and monetary interests at stake.

Sensational, patently false headline? - the Portuguese equivalent of The Sun

Nonetheless, Portugal is still a comparatively peaceful country, coming in 17th place in the Global Peace Index, with the most common crimes being petty theft and robbery, mainly in locations frequented by tourists. Common-sense is the main guideline here, such as not leaving valuables in plain sight in parked cars, keeping an eye on your wallet or bag in crowds, not withdrawing money from out of the way ATMs at night. In the event that the police are needed, call 112 from a public phone or 00351 112 from a cell phone.


In response to the backlog of criminal cases sitting in court, the government has proposed changes to current legislation to streamline the entire criminal process, such as expanding the applicability of summary judgments.

FYI Portugal was one of the first countries to abolish the death penalty, and the maximum prison sentences is 25 years, though parole is available after half time served, on good behavior.

The Labour Crisis in Portugal Posted by Gabriel on 9:53 pm

Unless you have been living in a cave for the past few years (which is likely given the rising housing prices and rent in recent years), you know that Portugal has been going through tough times as of late.

 While creating employment was one of the proposed solutions of the former government to avert the current financial crisis, with programs being created as early as 2008, the unemployment rate, especially amongst the younger generation, is at an all time high of 28.1% as of May, according to the latest Eurostat figures.

We wouldn't have know, if were not for the sign...

The Portuguese government, due to the concessions imposed on it, has been announcing new austerity measures every day, many of these focusing on employment and labour legislation.

The new government has stated that they are planning to change current labour laws, making them more flexible in order to enhance the ability of employers and big business to respond to the financial crisis. With a more flexible labour force, employers can respond to peaks and lulls of consumer demand more dynamically, cutting costs and improving efficiency. Even before the financial crisis, many international corporations criticised Portugal as a tough market to establish a business, precisely due to the protectionist labour laws.

Unfortunately, what these changes entail is facilitating layoffs and dismissals of employees, leaving them with very little protection or rights. The government plans to eliminate the figure of temporary contracts and make probation period more flexible. Consequently, changes will be made to the legal regime of permanent contracts, reducing them to a figure comparable to the “at will” employment regime of many US states, where either part can rescind or terminate the contract without cause. Apparently, the objective here is to make every workplace in Portugal a temp agency.

They have also proposed cutting employer social security contributions, meaning that employees will endure the brunt of social security contributions, in order to make the Portuguese market more attractive for companies by reducing their costs. They have also announced tax breaks to large business, while hiking the taxes of the workers.

As a result, they are also planning to cut unemployment benefits, since, as a direct result of lowering of social security contributions, the current system of benefits will be (not to say already is) unsustainable. Pensions will also be cut and a ceiling imposed.

The conjugation of all of these proposed changes makes for a grim future for the Portuguese worker. Frankly, I am surprised at the lack of popular reaction to these measures, compared to what we see in Greece.

How long until this is downtown Lisbon?

On the other hand, Portugal is the title holder of the world’s largest “arroz de lapas”, so at least not everything's bad.

The Portuguese health system is better then the Canadian health system - surprised? Posted by João on 5:58 pm

This past monday at the Canadian Studies International Research Linkages Workshop Luso-Canadians and their Descendants in Canada and in Portugal I presented a paper entitled "When the idyllic becomes a myth: Portuguese-Canadian descendants narrate pre- and post-return to Portugal". The findings presented in this presentation where based on interviews carried out with 20 Portuguese-Canadian descendants that have returned to Portugal, either by themselves or with their parents or spouses. My main point of discussion was based on the arguement that Portugal, a country often perceived as fantastic and fun before returning, seldom maintains that reputation once return in accomplished.

From the interviews carried out, people talked about their ruptures with Portuguese society encounted upon return, mainly concerned with the inner workings of Portuguese society, ranging from bureaucracies, to corruption, to lack of friendliness, to discrimination; to more personal experiences as well, namely clash of values and responsibilities and different ways of being. Now among these points of frustration, one point in particular was often highlighted - that of the Portuguese health system.

Many recounted negative experiences of waiting long hours before being attended to in emergency wards, waiting months on end for basic surgery, the disorganisation of Portuguese health centres and the bureaucracies involved in such things as obtaining a simple appointment, not to mention the lack of information distribution among different medical units and labratories (how often we do see people walking around with ex-rays in envelops, having to deliver them themselves).

Now as I delivered my narrative findings at the workshop, it was these Portuguese health system concerns that the post-presentation debate centred on. Of course my interviewees based their tellings on their own dealing with the two health system worlds - the Canadian and the Portuguese. When someone mentions that Hospital Santa Maria in Lisbon (below to the left) looks like something brought over from the former Soviet Union and tells of the superior confort offered up by hospitals in Toronto (below to the right) (if in fact any hospital can bring any confort), he/she talks from personal experiences and perceptions.

From these experiences, however, one thing must be remembered: they are fixed in time. If one is to read stories concerning the Canadian health system these day, one will also come across stories of long waiting lists for operations as well as bed shortages. In fact, when it comes to comparing the health systems of the two countries, many are often surprised to find out that according to the World Health Organization Health Report of 2000 (don't think there's been one done since), Portugal placed ahead of Canada at number 12 with Canada coming in at 30.

Surely we all ask ourselves: how can this be? I certainly do ... and you?

Workshop on Luso-Canadians and their descendants in Canada and in Portugal Posted by João on 11:48 pm

On the afternoon of Monday, the 27th of June, from 14:30 to 18:30 at the new TagusPark campus of Universidade Aberta (Edifício Inovação I - 2nd floor, room polivalente), myself, João Sardinha, am coordinating the Canadian Studies International Research Linkages Project Workshop: Luso-Canadians and their Descendants in Canada and in Portugal: Questions of Civic Participation and Diversity Management.

The workshop includes the presentation of seven papers, bringing together researchers from Portugal and Canada. These include:

"Understanding Portuguese-Canadian civic identity in a cosmopolitan context" - Robert Kenedy (York University, Toronto);

"Transnational practices and intergenerational transmittance among Azorean descendants in Quebec" - Ana Gherghel (Universidade dos Açores, Azores) & Josiane le Gall (Université du Québec a Montréal, Montreal);

"When the idyllic becomes a myth: Portuguese-Canadian descendants narrate pre- and post-return to Portugal" - João Sardinha (CEMRI-Universidade Aberta, Lisbon).

The event will also host the Canadian ambassador in Portugal, the Honourable Anne-Marie Bourcier who will provide the opening address.

There are more good then bad folks in Vancouver Posted by João on 1:35 am

Ok, by now I'm sure you've all heard about what happened after the Vancouver Canucks went down to the Boston Bruins in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals - yes, the riot of '11. The images of pillaging, burning vehicles, senseless beatings, etc... has hit the international media making downtown Vancouver look more downtown Baghdad. Well here at CanadiansinPortugal there's no way I'm going to give you images of the violence; no way! Instead I'm going to give you the other side of that equation - I'm going to spread a lot of praise to the thousands of Vancouverites who on the day following the riots went into the city to help clean up the mess.

By the way, the Canucks are already favourites to win next year's Cup. If anything, at least lets hope they can get back to the Finals so the city can redeem itself.

Workshop: Luso-Descendants and Transnational Living / Luso-Descendentes e Vivências Transnacionais Posted by João on 7:28 pm

On Tuesday, the 14th of Junho, at the University of Lisbon's Faculdade de Letras (Faculty of Letters), Instituto de Geografia e Planeamento do Território - IGOT in conjunction with the Centro de Estudos das Migrações e das Relações Interculturais - CEMRI, will be hosting the Workshop: Luso-Descendentes e Vivências Transnacionais: Algumas Linhas de Investigação (Luso-Descendants and Transnational Living: Some Lines of Research). This workshop under the coordination of João Sardinha (that would be me from CEMRI) and Sandra Silva (from IGOT), will, for the first time, bring together a number of Portuguese academic researchers who are carrying out research on descendants of Portuguese emigrants in the diaspora and also in the return setting, right here in Portugal. Issues up for debate tie together Luso-descendants and integration, identity, religion, media, football (soccer), and sense of belonging and conceptions of home.

At this workshop, I will also be premiering the short film: Narrativas de Regresso - Marta Raposo (Narratives of Return - Marta Raposo). Based on spoken accounts provided by the Luso-Canadian Fadista (or Fado singer if you will) Marta Raposo concerning her 'return' to Portugal in 2005 and her decision to go back to Canada in 2010 after 5 years of singing Fado in Portugal, this 15 minute film is the short version of the documentary made by your truely and António João Saraiva that will be launched in the Fall of this year, and will have as its title: Regressa Urgente (Urgent Return). More on that in the months to come.

The Canucks of 94 and the riot that was Posted by João on 2:59 am

Trevor Lindon, Pavel Bure, Greg Adams, Jiyrki Lumme, Kirk McLean and the list goes on... All under the coaching leadship of Pat Quinn. These were the unsung heros of the 1994 Vancouver Canucks that again, similar to the 82 team, made a surprising run for the Stanley Cup, but this time, came as close as they could have possibly gotten.

The first round series itself, against the Calgary Flames, ended up producing some of the most memorable moments in Canucks history. After being down 3 games to 1, the Canucks advanced with a game 7 breakaway overtime goal from the Russian Rocket, Pavel Bure (below).

After dispatching Calgary, the Dallas Stars and the Toronto Maple Leafs were easier tasks, both eliminated in 5 games. Back in the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in their history, again another New York team stood in their way (after being beaten by the NY Islanders 12 years earlier) - this time it was the potent Mark Messier-lead New York Rangers and this time around one of the greatest finals of all times would be witnessed.

At first glance nobody really gave the Canucks a chance, and after the first 4 games, it was beginning to look like the pundits would be right. The Rangers took a 3-1 game lead but Vancouver would not give up easily, coming back to win the next two and tieing up the series at 3 game a piece.

Game 7 would be a heartbreaker for all Canuck fans. Down 3-2 in the third period, Nathan Lafayette's shot off the post with just under 3 minutes to go will forever be remembered (below). That was as close as Vancouver would come as the Rangers would take the Cup.

Meanwhile, back in Vancouver, the end result would bring an unpleasant end to what was a fantastic playoff run. After game 7 was concluded, somewhere between 50,000 to 70,000 individuals converged upon Downtown Vancouver and at the intersection of Robson and Thurlow Street, a riot would ensue leading to nearly 200 hospitalisations and one rioter ending up with permanent brain damage after getting shot in the head with a plastic bullet by police.

Thus, what should have been a night of celebration in honour of a great playoff run, in the end, turned ugly on the streets of Vancouver. What has remained, however, are those moments, again, provided by a great generation of players not expected to go as far as they went. One image in particular would leave its mark: Trevor Lindon and Kirk McLean, two standouts that left it all on the ice on that June 14th of 1994.
